Why how much you feed matters more than you think
Most people start with a number — 120 grams per hen, per day. And we have gram weights as feeding recommendations on our pack. However, these are simply a starting point. Anyone who’s kept chickens for more than a season knows that feeding isn’t only about numbers.
Some days they eat more. Some days less. Foraging makes a difference. So does the weather. And the feed itself? That matters more than anything.
Because when you’re feeding organic you’re feeding clean. And clean nutrition is absorbed differently.
So, how much feed should you provide?
As a starting point, laying hens will typically consume between 110 to 130 grams per bird per day of a complete, balanced feed.
But this varies.
~ Is the weather cold? Appetite increases for hens to generate warmth.
~ Are your flocks foraging? Intake may drop, but nutrients might too.
~ If the feeds is highly digestible (like ours)? You’ll require less volume for the same result
With Aus Organic Feeds, what’s in the scoop goes further — because there are no fillers or chemical residues competing for absorption. Just whole, certified organic grains, properly balanced.
The answer isn’t always “more food”. Sometimes, it’s “better food”.
Feeding a full scoop doesn’t mean your birds are getting what they need. If the feed’s not balanced, or full of by-products, much of it can pass through without doing the job.
What to watch for:
- Overfeeding: Waste in the tray, birds picking around ingredients, wet or soiled litter.
- Underfeeding: Drop in egg production, lean birds, soft shells, food aggression.
Organic systems rely on balance, not bulking
In certified organic feeds, we can’t rely on synthetic fortifiers or protein spikes. Everything has to be built from whole ingredients that work in the bird, not just on paper.
That’s why we focus on:
- Real amino acid balance (not inflated protein claims)
- Whole grain digestibility
- A feeding rhythm that supports the flock’s natural cycles
Tips for keeping feeding in balance
- Feed in the morning when appetite is highest
- Use a trough or covered feeder to reduce spoilage
- If free-ranging, keep a base ration available at all times
- Provide shell grit and clean water all year-round
And most importantly: watch your birds. They’ll tell you what’s working.
Our products provide clean, complete nutrition. We don’t use fillers or take shortcuts. Just organic grains and the balance your flock needs every day.

You will see a feeding guide on the back of all our bags. However your hens needs may vary due to age, season or their environment, among other factors. Observe how they feed while offering all they need.
